Celebrating 30 years:
The ADD-vance journey so far...

From a handful of people in a cold church hall to supporting thousands of families every year, ADD-vance has been on quite a journey over the past three decades.

Read below to learn how the charity started as an idea by a Mum who needed to know she wasn’t the only one out there, to where it is today – a vital source of support to the Hertfordshire community and beyond.

A Support Network Begins

In response to the isolation felt by parents of children with ADHD, a monthly support group is established in a church hall in Potters Bar by ADD-vance founder, Anne Ross.

1999
The Helpline Launches

Operating out of Anne’s home, the first helpline is launched. It becomes clear that parents don't just want "experts"—they want to talk to someone who has walked in their shoes.

2003
Experts by Experience

ADD-A-Coach is Born: With funding from the European Social Fund, our first five parents are trained as professional coaches, valuing lived experience over academic theory.

2006
ADD-vance turns 10

Nearly 100 parents/carers and their children attend the celebrations at the local rugby club - a lively, fun and inclusive day to mark the occasion.

2007
Expanding the Reach

New support groups open in Ware and, our very first 6-week parent courses begin.

2009 - 2010
Broadening the Mission

We officially begin supporting families with Autism and Asperger’s as well as ADHD. To keep up with the growth, we move into our first "real" office in Sandridge.

2011
Becoming a Charity

We become a registered charity with a small board of three trustees. Our team of "Experts by Experience" continues to grow, ensuring no parent in Hertfordshire has to struggle in silence.

2012
1,000 Families Supported

ADD-vance supports almost 1,000 families in Hertfordshire in 2012, through our specialist coaching, training courses, support groups and helpline.

As a response to demand from professionals, the first ADD-vance training workshops for teachers and leisure staff are created.

2015
A Move to Hatfield

The office relocates to its current home on Fiddlebridge Lane in Hatfield.  Research by Cathy May (validated by Sheffield Hallam University) statistically proves the efficacy and positive impact of the ADD-vance coaching model.

2016
20 Years of ADD-vance

To celebrate ADD-vance turning 20, a Charity Ball was held at Hatfield House with guests including Kacey Ainsworth and Jake Wood.

The evening was a big success raising £10,000 for ADD-vance!

2018
Anne's work recognised by the Queen!
The certificate from the Queen conferring Anne's British Empire Medal.

Anne receives The British Empire Medal for her 'services to families of young people'.  A fantastic recognition for over two decades of support to countless number of families across Hertfordshire.

2019
Support in Schools
QB Check logo

We launch the QbCheck service and start working directly with schools to make sure children are supported in the classroom as well as at home.

2020
A Change of Hands
Debbie Wood - ADD-vance CEO

As our founder Anne Ross passes the baton to Debbie Wood, the pandemic hits. We move our entire community online, finding that even in a lockdown, our connection remains stronger than ever.

2021
The Helpline Expands

In mid 2021 ADD-vance began piloting a helpline for parents, carers and professionals, which was an extension of our existing helpline. This included extended support emails and plans, plus some additional hours of 1:1 support.

2023
Workplace Training launches
Group of employees from different sectors

In 2023, seeing a need for help for neurodivergent individuals to access support in the workplace, ADD-vance developed a range of training packages for employers. These have gradually expanded to include bespoke courses that meet the needs of individual employers.

2024
ADD-vance Gets a Refresh
ADD-vance logo

We say a fond farewell to Buddy, and introduce our updated logo and branding.  We receive nearly 2,000 calls to our helpline and support over 5,000 parents through our workshop programme.
